Dirt acts like sandpaper on your furniture's upholstery. Using your furniture, grinds those particles against the fabric, damaging it. Weekly vacuuming will help minimize that damage.
Fabric Protection
Fabric protectors obviously help protect fabrics from soil and stains. Some are applied at the time of the fabric's manufacture and others are applied at the store, or can be applied at home. Fabric Protectors do not make your upholstery immune to dirt and spills. It only make it more difficult for dirt and stains to permanently damage the fabric. It does not put a plastic cover on it. So even if your upholstery has fabric protection, the above suggestions still apply.

The furniture industry adopted a cleanability code that can help you determine the best way to clean your upholstery. If your furniture carries this code, it can normally be found under the seat cushion. When cleaning a spot yourself, ALWAYS pretest the cleaning solution on an inconspicuous area.
